China to Crack Down on Web Porn

The Internet is a great thing insofar as it has increased to power of the average person in the world to speak their mind and express a wide range of ideas, and given many the opportunity for self-employment and entrepreneurship that were heretofore unaffordable, and has made it simple for people at great distances to communicate as if they were just next door, the Internet has its dark side too. Online casinos and Internet Porn have proliferated on the same worldwide web, and are causing untold harm to families, and indeed , anybody who becomes addicted to either/or.

However, China is cracking down on it, and has even arrested, and sentenced the largest Chinese purveyor of online smut to life imprisonment.

While I believe that ideas should be freely debated and left to stand or fall on their own merits, I do strongly support censorship of pronography and online casinos. They do not contribute in any way to the free expression of ideas. all they do is create false, exploitive images to tickle fantasies, which lead to the destruction of marriages and families.

Libertarians will pounce all over me for supporting this kind of censorship, but I submit that both pornography and gambling are addictive behaviours, and that once a threshold is crossed, it no longer remains a simple choice of viewing it or not.It becomes a compulsion which eventually brings about irresponsible behaviour that causes harm to others, who had no choice in the matter.
